Word Chain — the compound word puzzle

Play any time+ a new puzzle every day

Word Chain hands you the first and last word of a chain and hides everything in between. Each word has to join the word before it and the word after it into a real compound: SUN → FLOWER → BED → ROOM. Find the missing links and the chain closes.

It rewards a different kind of thinking than a guessing game. You are not searching a dictionary, you are searching the space of words that fit on both sides at once — and the second constraint is usually the one that cracks it.

Play the daily chain, work through the level ladder one rung at a time, or switch to Unlimited for a random chain whenever you want another. The daily is one chain among many, not a ration.

How to play Word Chain

  1. Look at the given first and last words of the chain.
  2. Fill a hidden slot with a word that forms a compound with its neighbour.
  3. Work inward from whichever end is most constrained — it usually only takes one anchor.
  4. Close the whole chain before you use up your four mistakes.
  5. Finish faster for a speed bonus on top of the per-word score.

What you get

Word Chain questions

What is a compound word chain?

A run of words where every neighbouring pair joins into a single compound word — SUN and FLOWER make SUNFLOWER, FLOWER and BED make FLOWERBED, and so on down the chain.

How many levels are there?

The ladder is built from the chain library and grows as chains are added. You can replay any level you have already unlocked, and you advance one level at a time.

Is there a daily Word Chain?

Yes — one chain a day, the same for everyone. It sits alongside the level ladder and Unlimited mode rather than replacing them, so you can keep playing after the daily is done.
